On Thursday August 18th the Pelham Probus Events Committee organized a tour of Morningstar Mill. We toured the grist mill from 1872, the turbine shed, and the family home that has been restored to 1932. It is such a beautiful setting with a 60 foot cataract! The weatherman cooperated and we were able to enjoy a picnic on the grounds of the Mill property after our tour. It was a fun way to spend the day with friends!

This summer's Road Rally started at the Pelham Friends Church in Fonthill and finished at the home of the Westell's in Fenwick. We drove past 14 sites of interest and answered 15 questions about a variety of the sites. Everyone enjoyed a good time. In May our Probus Events Committee arranged a series of four workshops at the Jordan Historical Museum. It entailed four separate workshops on school as it was in 1908, making pottery with clay, watercolour painting techniques and fractur painting. The museum is a small gem with a lovely meeting room available for the workshops and other activities. Those that attended had a really good time!
Check out the museum’s website to see the variety of workshops available all year long. They are inexpensive and available to anyone! https://lincolnmuseum.ca/whats-on On the 26th of March, 26 PROBUS members/guests took a tour of the White Meadows Farm sugar bush. We survived the sudden torrential downpour that started just before boarding the wagons that took us into the woods. Luckily the wagons were fully covered and sheltered us from the rain, and by the time we arrived the rain had stopped. We were then led on a guided tour through beautiful woods, stopping at various stations along the way, where we learned about the history and evolution of maple syrup production. Our guide was an excellent speaker with a great sense of humour, which made the tour very entertaining. We had an opportunity to taste taffy on snow as well as several of the farm’s maple syrup products, and to saw off a slice of log in the traditional way and have it stamped with a maple leaf to keep as a souvenir. After the tour, we headed over to the Grill on Canboro where we socialized for another couple of hours while enjoying dinner and drinks. How lucky are we to have been able to gather safely, with lots of space around us, at the Peninsula Lakes Golf Club on Friday, December 3. The traditional turkey luncheon, with all the trimmings, was outstanding. Conversations and laughter at the bar and over luncheon tables were a delight to hear. Thank you, Judy Westell, for placing beautiful centerpieces at each table. I hope the winners will enjoy their poinsettias for weeks to come. Thank you, President Rick, for gathering us together and extending season’s greetings. Seeing 65 smiling faces reunited after such a long time apart warmed my heart. Sincerely, Marian McDonald On November 4th, 36 PROBUS members came out to enjoy a morning tour of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum followed by a delicious lunch buffet in the hanger amongst the aircraft. Our group was split into smaller groups of 6 for the tour - each being led by knowledgeable tour guides. It was a true learning experience of WWII flight history. Needless to say the Lancaster Bomber was the highlight of the tour and seeing it up close was exciting especially when we’ve often seen it flying over Fonthill. However it was just one of the many unique, historic aircraft that were on display. All in all it was a wonderful fall outing enjoyed by everyone. A comment from our club's President who attended this event: "Our tour guide (Dale) was first rate, very knowledgeable and full of interesting stories about the craft that are housed at the museum. Lunch was also terrific." Thanks Linda Olsson for assisting in the set-up for this terrific event. 20 stalwart members of our Club braved November type weather on October 23 to participate in a tour of Drummond Hill cemetery. Under hauntingly gray skies, this wonderfully choreographed event created by Niagara Falls History Museum highlighted historic notables of the area including Elizabeth Lundy, Harmanus Crysler, and Laura Secord. From their own graves, 7 ghostly presences shared significant events from their lives with very attentive (albeit cold) participants. A dinner that followed in the warmer environment of Chuck’s Roadhouse was marked by storytelling, laughter, and good food. Thank you, Marian, for organizing this event. We know that you remind us regularly that, in Probus, Our Strength is Fellowship and Our Success is Participation. On the evening of Tuesday October 5th, over 30 Probus members/guests gathered together at the Beer and Wine Garden of the Howell Pumpkin Farm in Fonthill. As this was an outdoor gathering, we were thankful for the mild temperatures and lack of rain (after two very wet days). It was an opportunity to socialize while enjoying a beer, cider or other beverage, and to catch up with other members who, in many cases, hadn’t seen each other in a while. Some of us also partook in the burgers, poutine, pumpkin donuts and other snacks that were available. The venue was very relaxed and casual, with a variety of tables to sit at or areas to wander around while talking (even some goats to look at). The general feedback received after the event was that it was an enjoyable, fun time and a great spot to gather. Under azure blue skies of a spectacular late August day 50 Probus members gathered at Charles Daley Park. Majestic oak trees along the waterfront of Lake Ontario provided wonderful shade while out in the dappled bay ships passed in distant waters. The Special Events team, led by Judy Westell, arrived early at the picnic site to move tables into the shade, cover them with tablecloths, and prepare the buffet table. To respect Covid precautions, team members masked and gloved served delicious food to appreciative diners. All agreed that a catered picnic was an excellent idea. A great variety of tasty sandwiches, a spinach salad, and a potato salad were followed by homemade squares and fresh fruit. Thank you Judy Westell, June Berndt, Wendy Hammond, Evelyn Thoy, Kathy Durst and Linda Olsson! |
