25 of our intrepid, Probus wine club members visited the Kew Winery on King Street, east of Beamsville on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. The estate manager, AJ led us on a tour of the vineyard, the house and their production facility, then led us through a tasting of 4 of their wines, including a sparkling, two whites and a red. The property was acquired in pioneer times by the Kew family, and their descendants lived there until 1969. In the early 70’s, Kew was one of the first viticulture vineyards to be planted in Niagara, and currently hosts some of the oldest vines in the region. AJ explained the difference the maturity of these vines makes in the quality of the wine produced.
Family owned and operated, with rustic charm, this boutique estate winery invites guests with an intimate barn-style tasting room, nestled next to their beautiful, hand-harvested vineyard. Passionate, small-lot winemaking and wholesome family values, make Villa Romana a welcoming stop along the Beamsville Bench wine route. Enjoy daily wine tastings, explore Italian influences, and meet the owners, for a memorable, relaxing, and personalized experience. Be sure to check out their collection of authentic Roman artifacts on-site!

To date we have visited the following wineries:
February 1: Cave Springs Winery March 14: Stonewall Winery On November 28th we went to Malivoire. Their winemaker, Shiraz Mottiar, who was featured in the documentary “Crush: Message in a Bottle”, spoke to our group.
In April our wine tasting group visited Kacaba Winery where we enjoyed their hospitality and tasted five samples of their wine. We learned about the history of the winery, and our hostess provided us with tasting notes as we sampled each wine. It is a beautiful property with friendly staff, and many of us have plans to return this summer to enjoy more wine on their patio.
The wine and beer tasters visited the Niagara College Teaching Winery. We enjoyed sparkling wine on the patio, then we walked to the vineyard where we learned about winemaking and the challenges facing local winemakers. We sampled three beers and three wines made by the students. It’s a beautiful facility and it was interesting to learn about the courses offered locally to brewing and winemaking students in our area. https://ncteachingwinery.ca/
Bench Brewery is a such a warm and friendly place to visit. We rearranged the picnic tables so we could all sit together and enjoy the sunshine. Some of us had flights of 4 of their original beers, others had a glass of their favourite brew. Many of us also enjoyed snacks from their kitchen. It was a perfect, spring-like day with lots of lively conversation. Our group sampled wines in the cozy domes at Fielding, and because it was a such a warm day we didn’t even need the heaters. We made our selection of 4 samples from their wine list, and some of us ordered their charcuterie. Everyone appreciated the wines and the atmosphere at this beautiful winery. |
